Leadership 2008 Conference

Last year’s Conference, held in Columbus on April 14 and 15, was attended by 462 social workers, mental health professionals, healthcare providers, local and state health department staff, community based organization staff, consumers and community activists. The Conference offered traditional leadership training with national and regional speakers.

Individuals representing Ryan White Program Part B Consortia, the AIDS Education & Training Center and the HIV CARE Services Section, as well as People Living With HIV/AIDS planned the 2008 Conference. This planning committee worked diligently with sponsors to offer an affordable conference that addressed issues affecting all those working and living within the HIV/AIDS spectrum. Our plan is to once again offer an affordable Conference in 2009 that will be open to everyone affected by HIV/AIDS.

With 39 workshops, 4 plenary sessions and an Ethics Training session, the Leadership 2008 Conference offered participants numerous educational opportunities regarding all aspects of HIV disease care and treatment.

THANK YOU!

Particular credit is due the HIV CARE Services Section of the Ohio Department of Health, the Pennsylvania/Mid-Atlantic AIDS Education Training Center, and the Ohio Ryan White Part B Consortia for their efforts in planning the Conference. Thanks also to Bristol-Myers Squibb for sponsoring the Sunday, April 13 pre-Conference dinner and program for consumers.

Also, a thank-you is due the AIDS Memorial Quilt in Atlanta for making the Quilt display possible and a special thank-you is owed to National Association of People With AIDS from Washington for helping make the Conference a success.

Additional support for the 2008 Conference was provided by Abbott Laboratories, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, GlaxoSmithKline, Gilead Sciences, Tibotec Therapeutics, Merck & Co., Roche Laboratories, Auxilium Pharmaceuticals and Pfizer Inc.

And finally, thanks to all the individuals and organizations around Ohio who participated in this year’s Conference. We hope to see you all again in 2009.

The Goals of the Leadership 2008 Conference were:

  • To provide healthcare providers, social workers and other HIV/AIDS care providers with knowledge and practical skills that will benefit their clients
  • To provide consumers of Ryan White funds and all People Living With HIV/AIDS, the training and organizational skills necessary to become involved in the provision of HIV/AIDS services
  • To provide consumers of Ryan White funds and all People Living With HIV, the opportunity to meet resource representatives
  • The Leadership Conference program, materials and all conference meals were free to all participants. In addition, OAC provided free hotel lodging to 110 People Living With HIV/AIDS. Continuing education credits were available for social workers, counselors and nurses.
