Healing Weekends
Since 1987, the OAC has held 69 Healing Weekends for thousands of people living with HIV/AIDS. Healing Weekends are a gathering of about 75 people living with HIV/AIDS who have come together to explore a variety of healing experiences.
During the three-day weekend retreat, participants learn various healing exercises that they can use in their daily lives to compliment their traditional medical care. In a communal setting, far away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, participants are provided with the care and support they need to help end the feelings of isolation that having HIV/AIDS can cause.
The Goals of the Healing Weekends:
- To introduce participants to a number of complimentary and alternative healing approaches and resources.
- To provide both didactic and experiential workshops to help meet the needs of participants for information and practical experience.
- To increase self-empowerment, social networking skills, and build relationships amongst peers.
- To provide large and small group support.
The next OAC Healing Weekend will be held October 24-26, 2008 at the Fountain Inn in Lakeside
The October Healing Weekend will be for HIV positive people from northern and west-central Ohio (including the Cleveland, Akron, Canton, Youngstown Toledo, Lima and Mansfield areas).
HIV positive Ohioans have been attending OAC Healing Weekend since 1987, participating in a variety of workshops and activities in a peaceful, communal setting far away from their everyday busy lives. During the three-day Weekend, participants explore the physical, emotional and spiritual components of health and wellness. Guided by social workers, mental health professionals, medical experts and other HIV care and treatment professionals, Healing Weekend participants learn the latest care and treatment information, while receiving much needed support.
OAC’s Healing Weekends consistently draw more applications than space can accommodate. First priority is given to applicants who have not previously been accepted to an OAC Healing Weekend. Those applicants who have gone for the longest time without being accepted to an OAC Healing Weekend are accepted next. Those not selected will be placed on a waiting list. Each applicant will be notified by phone or by mail whether they have been accepted for the Weekend or are on the waiting list. Confirmation letters will contain a map and a list of things to bring for the Weekend.
