Because of significant cuts to Ryan White services in Ohio, the Ohio AIDS coalition will not be producing the annual Lakeside Healing Weekend in October, 2010.
All Healing Weekend programs are canceled for the remainder of 2010. We will resume Healing Weekend programs in 2011. Specific dates for 2011 Healing Weekends will be announced in January 2011.
OAC Women's Healing Weekend Held
June 11-13 in Dayton
52 HIV-positive women form around Ohio attended the Weekend.
HIV-positive women face a unique combination of issues related to their gender and HIV status. Clinical services are comprehensive, but limited in range. Medical care alone does not address integral familial, social, community, and personal issues. Social support, community involvement, and healthy relationships are vital for the overall health and well being of a woman.
This OAC Healing Weekend sought to improve the knowledge and understanding women have regarding their health and wellbeing. As a result, women will be better prepared to cope with issues that might interfere with adherence to their medical plan.
The Women’s Healing Weekend was at the Bergamo Center in Dayton. The Bergamo retreat center offered participants a chance to reflect and learn in an inviting and comfortable atmosphere.
The Women’s Healing Weekend agenda was separated into three tracks: Women and Personal Health, Building and Maintaining Healthy Relationships, and Advocacy/Empowerment.These tracks allowed women to learn various healing exercises that they could use in their daily lives.In this communal setting, far away from the stressors of daily life, women were provided with the care and support they need to help end the feeling of isolation that having HIV/AIDS often causes.
OAC’s Healing Weekends consistently draw more applications than space can accommodate. First priority is given to applicants who have not previously been accepted to an OAC Healing Weekend. Those applicants who have gone for the longest time without being accepted to an OAC Healing Weekend are accepted next. Those not selected will be placed on a waiting list. Each applicant will be notified by phone or by mail whether they have been accepted for the Weekend or are on the waiting list. Confirmation letters will contain a map and a list of things to bring for the Weekend.
